How to Prepare a Killing Resume for Inexperience Fresh Graduate

April 29, 2012 by Tony in Career Guide with 1 Comment

Most fresh graduates dread the task of writing their resumes. This is due mainly to the fact that writing a resume is almost as challenging as the search for a job itself. There are many things that should be taken into account such as creativity, effectiveness, and readability, among others. Especially for fresh university graduates who do not have any work experience to incorporate as part of their credentials, resume writing can be a truly demanding task. Fortunately there are proven and tested ways one can follow in order to make it more manageable.

Here are some tips on how to prepare a killing resume with little experience for fresh grad.

Include Your Contact

Be mindful of the seemingly minor details. Even if your resume comes with a cover letter, it is still important that the resume itself contains all of your contact details. You must never forget to include your name, home phone, mobile phone, email address, and other ways by which the potential employer can reach you. Most resume writers focus only on the body of the resume and although this is a good approach, it should not compromise other seemingly minor but equally important personal details.

Show your Competence

Be mindful of your language. Your resume should be able to capture your character and more importantly, communicate your competencies. One way to achieve this is to use active and strong language or words. Skip the usage of pronouns such as “me” or “I”, as well as other words that alienate the reader from your resume. Also, avoid the use of acronyms, buzzwords, and jargons specific to an industry for these would limit your potential employers.

Be Concise

Be straightforward. The best resumes start with a strong summary; this is the most crucial part. Employers or recruiters do not usually spend a considerable amount of time checking every detail included in your resume. Most headhunters actually rely on the first few sentences to help them decide whether you are the person they are looking for. With that said it is in your best interest to come up with the most effective summary of competencies and career objective you could put into words.

Fact Please

Accuracy and truthfulness. Although your main objective is to inspire an employer’s interest, it does not mean that you have the license to write inaccurate or false information in your resume. You have to know that employers have the means to trace your records or validate or invalidate your personal background. With that said it is definitely important to stick only with truthful and accurate information.

Academic Achievements

Do not forget about your academic achievements. Since you still do not have work experiences to sell, you have to rely on your academic achievements. But this does not mean you have to include all of your curricular involvements all the way back to your freshman year. Be sure to include only the most important ones, specifically those that are directly related to the job you are applying for.

What Keeps You Motivated?

Clearly state what keeps you motivated. One way for employers to determine whether an applicant is best suited to their company or organization is by referring to the applicants’ listed goals and motivations. Although you are still a fresh graduate without ample or even zero work experience, by communicating what you want to happen with your career in a polite and interesting manner, you can easily get the interest of an employer.

Reread Your Resume Before Sending Out

Proofread and edit. Once you have already finished your resume, it should not stop there. The next step in the process is careful proofreading and editing. This is where you can address all possible errors whether grammatically or typographically. Furthermore, since you will be applying for different job vacancies, it is highly recommended that you take time to edit your resume in a way that would seem like it was written specifically for the job you are applying for. This can be done by making a few changes in your chosen words as well as your highlighted skills.

Writing a resume is an art and a science. It has its own rules but you can always find ways in order to make it your own. In the end, the most successful resumes are those that best capture the person being referred to.
